Born in 1956 in Ivanovo.
In 1979 he graduated from the Siberian Metallurgical Institute as a metallurgical engineer.

He started working as an electrical mechanic at "Uzhkuzbassugle" in 1975. After graduation, he worked in the NGO "Tulachermet", where he rose from assistant steelmaker to deputy head of the department.
Since 1986 - deputy chief engineer, and since 1989 - Deputy General Director of the Karaganda Metallurgical plant.
Since 1993, a board member of several leading Russian metallurgical enterprises. Since 1996 - Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Sayan Aluminum Plant, a member of the board of directors of Novokuznetsk, Bratsk aluminum plant, Magnitogorsk and Novolipetsk steel plant.
Since 1998 - Chairman of the Board of Directors of OAO "NLMK".
Laureate of USSR Council of Ministers for Science and Technology in 1990. Honorary Metallurgist of Russia, Commander of the Order of Merit, Knight of the Order of Sergiy Radonezhsky.
